Why Moisturizer Is Your Skin’s Best Friend — Especially in Winter

By Olivia Green, Licensed Esthetician & Esthetics Educator — Washington State

As a licensed esthetician in Washington State, I’m often asked one question more than any other — especially once the rain rolls in and the temperatures drop: “Do I really need to moisturize?” My answer is always the same: yes, absolutely, and here’s why.

What Does Moisturizer Actually Do?

Your skin has a natural protective layer called the stratum corneum — the outermost layer of the epidermis. Think of it as a brick wall: skin cells (the bricks) are held together by lipids, ceramides, and fatty acids (the mortar). This barrier keeps moisture locked in and environmental irritants locked out.

Moisturizers work through three primary mechanisms. Humectants, like hyaluronic acid and glycerin, draw water from the environment and deeper skin layers up into the epidermis. The TKO Sheer Hydration formula is a great example of this at work: it relies on hyaluronic acid and vegan collagen to deliver balanced hydration without any heaviness — ideal for oily or combination skin types. Emollients, such as squalane and jojoba oil, fill in the gaps between skin cells, smoothing texture and reinforcing that “mortar.” Finally, occlusives, like shea butter and petrolatum, sit on top of the skin and form a physical seal to prevent transepidermal water loss (TEWL). Most quality moisturizers combine all three for maximum effectiveness.

Why Winter Is So Hard on Your Skin

Here in the Pacific Northwest, winter brings a particular challenge. Cold outdoor air holds less moisture than warm air. When that cold air is heated indoors, the relative humidity drops even further. The result? Your skin is essentially being wrung out from both sides: low humidity outside pulls moisture away, and dry heated air does the same indoors.

When your skin’s barrier is compromised by this constant moisture loss, you may notice tightness, flaking, redness, or increased sensitivity. For clients with eczema or rosacea, winter can trigger serious flare-ups. Even oily skin types are not immune — dehydration (lack of water) and oiliness (excess sebum) are two completely different issues, and oily skin can absolutely become water-deprived. For acne-prone clients who worry that moisturizer will cause breakouts, the TKO Treat & Hydrate Moisturizer is a perfect winter option: it’s oil-free and combines salicylic acid to keep pores clear with hyaluronic acid to restore the hydration winter strips away.

How to Moisturize the Right Way

Timing matters enormously. Moisturizer should be applied to slightly damp skin - within 60 seconds of cleansing or bathing — to trap that surface water and maximize absorption. Apply with gentle, upward strokes rather than pulling or rubbing, which can cause micro-irritation over time.

In winter, we recommend switching from lighter spring/summer moisturizers to something richer and more nourishing. The TKO Fortifying Moisture Creme is one of our go-to recommendations for this season. It combines squalane, red algae extract, and glycerin to restore suppleness and reinforce the barrier, making it especially well-suited for dry or mature skin dealing with the harshest winter conditions.

Don’t neglect your nighttime routine either. While we sleep, our skin goes into repair mode, and that’s the ideal window to give it something powerful to work with. The TKO Renewal Night Creme pairs a gentle retinoid (Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate) with CoQ10 and lecithin to replenish hydration while actively improving fine lines and elasticity overnight. It’s formulated to minimize the irritation often associated with retinoid use. That’s a huge bonus for sensitive skin in winter.

For those dealing with particularly dry or reactive skin this season, applying a hydrating serum before your moisturizer can make a significant difference. Layer thin-to-thick: serum first, then moisturizer, then SPF during the day. And don’t forget your lips, hands, and neck. These areas lose moisture just as readily as your face.

The Importance of Consistency in Skincare

Consistency is key when it comes to skincare. We all lead busy lives, but taking a few moments each day to care for our skin can make a world of difference. Establishing a routine helps our skin stay balanced and healthy.

We can think of our skincare routine as a daily ritual. Each step is important, and skipping even one can lead to issues down the line. By committing to a consistent regimen, we help our skin build resilience against environmental stressors.

The Bottom Line

Moisturizing is maintenance. Your skin barrier is the first line of defense your body has against the outside world. When it’s healthy, your skin looks better, feels better, and does its job. When it’s compromised, everything from sensitivity to premature aging can follow.

This winter, think of your moisturizer the way you think of your rain jacket: something you reach for every single day without question. Whether you’re reaching for a lightweight daily hydrator or a rich overnight treatment, the most important thing is that you’re reaching for something. Your skin will thank you for it.
