Sun Damage vs. Aging: How to Tell the Difference
Wrinkles and dark spots happen. But they don't always happen for the same reason. Knowing which one you're dealing with changes what you do about it.
Most people lump sun damage and aging together because they show up around the same time. They are two different processes, and your skin responds better when you treat them correctly.
What Aging Actually Does to Skin
Intrinsic aging is what happens regardless of your environment. Starting in your mid-20s, collagen production slows. Skin cell turnover gets longer. The fat pads under your skin begin to thin.
The signs of intrinsic aging tend to be structural. Fine lines that appear when your face is at rest. Hollowing around the eyes and temples. A general loss of firmness.
This is normal. It is not damage. It is your skin doing what skin does over time.
What Sun Damage Looks Like
Sun damage, or photoaging, is different. It is external, cumulative, and preventable in a way that intrinsic aging is not.
UV exposure breaks down collagen and elastin faster than time alone. It creates excess melanin production that shows up as dark spots, uneven tone, and patches of discoloration. It roughens texture and causes visible blood vessels to appear at the surface.
The key difference: sun damage is often patchy and uneven. Aging tends to be more symmetrical. If one cheek has more spots than the other, that is usually sun, not time.
How to Tell Which One You're Looking At
Signs of sun damage:
• Brown or tan spots in clusters, especially on the cheeks, nose, and hands
• Rough or leathery texture that feels different from surrounding skin
• Visible capillaries or broken blood vessels near the surface
• Skin that looks older in sun-exposed areas than in areas usually covered
Signs of intrinsic aging:
• Lines and creases present even when your face is relaxed
• Loss of volume under the eyes, along the cheeks, and at the jaw
• Skin that feels thin or crepey
• Changes that appear evenly across the face rather than in patches
Why This Matters for Your Routine
Sun damage calls for antioxidant protection and ingredients that address pigmentation. Vitamin C is one of the most effective tools for this. SPF is non-negotiable.
Intrinsic aging calls for hydration, barrier function, and cell turnover support. Retinol, peptides, and good moisturizers do the heavy lifting here.
Most people are dealing with both. Start by protecting against more sun damage first. Then work on what's already there.
